It was never a good idea. That model relies on a second blockchain with less security and decentralization, another exchange rate to keep track of, and another layer of accounting. The Lightning Network eliminates this need entirely.

Reliability is a function of the infrastructure being built, which is happening rapidly due to its demand. Scalability on the Lightning layer will almost certainly outpace any adoption of altcoins as a payment network.
